On Instagram and Twitter there has been an outpouring of thoughts, prayers and tears for such a well known man in the fashion world.
His instagram Reads: " The House of KARL LAGERFELD shares, with deep emotion and sadness, the passing of its creative director, Karl Lagerfeld, on February 19, 2019, in Paris, France. He was one of the most influential and celebrated designers of the 21st century and an iconic, universal symbol of style. Driven by a phenomenal sense of creativity, Karl was passionate, powerful and intensely curious. He leaves behind an extraordinary legacy as one of the greatest designers of our time, and there are no words to express how much he will be missed."
So... WHO WAS HE?
-- For those of you who don't know, or those that only know of him in pictures because of the Kardashians®, let us take some time to give you a brief bio on this man that should be celebrated, for his uniqueness, his strangeness. It was his strangeness that made him such an icon. We use the word strange, as it's a word even he used...
"I don’t like standard beauty. There is no beauty without strangeness. "
Karl was considered an icon in the fashion world, internationally. Born in Hamburg, Germany he was known for his constant reinvention, and bold designs.
At the age of 14 years old, Karl moved to Paris with the blessing of his parents. He submitted a few sketches to a design competition that won first place in the coat category.
Karl's coat was then produce by Pierre Balmain, who then offered Lagerfeld (17 years) a job as his assistant.
In 1957 Karl became art director for fashion designer Jean Patou, and by 1962 Karl Lagerfeld had become one of THE FIRST freelancers in the modern industry. Working on fashion between France, Germany, England and Italy.
1965 - Present Karl Lagerfeld has been working with Fendi.
Did you know that he was the first fashion designer to have his own perfume before having his own label? CHLOE hit the market in 1975 and is still around if you search for it. ( I found some! )
Named the director of House of Chanel in 1983, but one year later, ('84) he was ready for his own fashion house. So he continued his collaborations with Chanel and Fendi, and opened the House of KARL LAGERFELD.
Around 1987, as a creative he moved forward in this endeavors, and decided it was time to move behind the cameras and create his own fashion campaigns. Many of his images have been transformed in to works of art and found in books.
For those of you readers that enjoy Hans Christian Anderson stories, Karl Lagerfeld had his hand in those too! In 1992 they collaborated, and Lagerfeld, lent his hand to 60 creative and colorful illustrations to the classic fairy tale, "The Emperor's New Clothes."
He wrote several books, and opened a book publishing house in 1999. As well as made many other contributions to the art and photography world in this way.
By 2000 he was the first designer in the world to be asked by fashion giant H&M to collaborate, and he designed 30 pieces in a capsule collection; which was amazing!
Mr Lagerfeld's contributions to the world have been astronomical, and these are just the tip of the iceberg. For those of you interested in art, fashion, cosmetics, beauty, if you don't know who he was, this small post should be the jumping off point for you. For those of you who knew who he was and the impact he had on the clothing you're wearing now, you know how much he will be missed.
The news of the day has been upsetting, but like the world, fashion never stops...
Our hearts mourn with the families and friends, the fans, and the collaborators of this fashion icon, man, artist and so much more. Look up some of his quotes, learn more ! Knowledge is always important... "The future belongs to your imagination." ~ Karl Lagerfeld.
